When God made the world, our first parents lived in God’s presence and had ongoing access to Him. Upon sinning against God, humanity was cast away. The result is that we have a hard time understanding who God is because we are sinners, and He is Spirit.
One of the reasons that Jesus came down from Heaven was to show us God. In John 14:8, a man named Philip asked Jesus a question that at some point everyone has likely asked, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”
Have you ever wished you could see God? If so, then Philip’s question and Jesus’ answer in John 14:9 are for you: “Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?’”
God is spiritual and lives in the unseen realm. We are physical and live in the seen realm. As sinners, we cannot cross that threshold and go up. As our Savior, Jesus did cross that threshold and came down.
While on the earth, Jesus was a mirror reflecting to us the character of God the Father and God the Spirit. Colossians 1:15 says, “He is the image of the invisible God…” Just as you have a mirror in your home and car to reflect your image, so too Jesus is God’s mirror reflecting Himself so that we could see Him in the character of Christ.
The old adage, “like father, like son” rings true with God the Father and God the Son. Speaking of the birth of Jesus, John 1:1-3, 14, 17-18 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son… Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.”
During the Christmas season, it is important to remind ourselves that God cannot be known apart from Jesus Christ. Furthermore, in our world filled with fear, pain, confusion, and uncertainty, the best Christmas present we can give anyone is the good news that the one true God has come down to love, save, and help us and His name is Jesus Christ!
