“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 3:20
Life often feels like a long journey through the wilderness—full of struggles, disappointments, and a deep longing for something more. Hebrews reminds us that our journey mirrors the Exodus. Just as God rescued His people from slavery in Egypt and led them to the Promised Land, He has rescued us from sin through Jesus and is leading us toward our eternal home. But until we get there, we must walk by faith, trusting that the best is yet to come.
The author of Hebrews uses the Exodus as an analogy for our lives. Through the Resurrection of Jesus, God supernaturally delivered us, defeated our pharaoh of Satan and slavery to sin, and promised us an eternal home and rest.
Yet here we are, wandering through this broken world, longing for Home. The key, Hebrews says, is to have faith in the good news of Jesus and to keep following God through the desert. Those who don’t understand the real Heaven waste their lives trying to create a version of it on earth. The Israelites given the Fourth Commandment in Exodus 20 about the Sabbath, spoken of in Hebrews 4, were the same people who got drunk, threw wild parties, and worshiped a golden calf—adopting twisted practices from their time in slavery.
In Heaven, the eternal home for a Christian, those who have a relationship with Jesus will enjoy the same kind of things we love on the Sabbath—only perfected. There will be sports, music, learning, art, swimming, hikes, pets, cooking, travel, adventure, and, yes, even naps—just like Jesus, who napped to set an example for us on how to sabbath. Heaven and Earth were united before sin and will be restored after sin. What Adam and Eve enjoyed before the Fall is what we will enjoy forever when sin is no more.
Heaven isn’t some boring, disconnected, spirit-only realm—it’s real life made perfect. Everything good and beautiful that God intended will be restored. But Heaven isn’t just about what we’ll do; it’s about who we’ll be with—Jesus.
If you have a relationship with Jesus, what are you most looking forward to about Heaven?
