Can Jesus Expose Your Heart?

“…and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man…” – Daniel 7:13

In this amazing scene recorded in Luke 5:17-26, Jesus’ power and popularity were surging so much that people could not get near Him. Some friends who deeply cared for their paralyzed friend literally tore the roof off the house where Jesus was ministering to lower their friend in front of Jesus. This had to be a very strange scene.

Jesus not only heals the man but also forgives his sin. In this act, Jesus was clearly revealing Himself to be God. Since we have sinned against God, only God can forgive our sins.

The religious leaders present accuse Jesus of blasphemy but do not even consider that He is in fact God among them. Jesus then refers to Himself as the “Son of Man.” This divine title is taken from Daniel 7, where it was predicted that Jesus Christ, who is eternally God, would enter into history as a man.

The healed man likely ran and skipped home, praising God. The crowd who witnessed this healing miracle went home in awe of God, sharing the good news of the healing power of Jesus.

In this scene, we witness that people can and do have very different reactions to Jesus’ miracles. The man is forgiven and praises God along with the crowd, while the religious leaders despise what He has said and done, attacking Jesus with accusations that could bring the death penalty. When Jesus shows up with power in word and deed, everyone’s hearts are exposed.

Come back tomorrow where we answer whether Jesus raises the dead today.

How would you react if you witnessed this miracle?
