Can Jesus Heal from a Distance?

“The official said to him, ‘Sir, come down before my child dies.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your son will live.’ The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.” – John 4:49-50

As a parent, it’s hard to imagine anything worse than watching your young son slowly dying, struggling to breathe, and confined to his bed with only hours to live. The desperation is unimaginable. In this scene, a powerful and affluent man, who works for the government that is harassing Jesus and will ultimately crucify Him, takes a long journey and comes to Jesus, begging for a miracle.

Jesus declines to travel to the boy’s bedside and instead asks the man to trust the word Jesus has spoken, that the boy would be healed from a distance by His authority. In faith, the father believed the word of Jesus and headed home, trusting that his son was healed. In this scene, we see that faith is both our beliefs and behaviors. This man believed Jesus had healed his son, and his behavior is a demonstration of his faith in Jesus’ powerful authority.

Today, Jesus is still healing from a distance by the authority of His word, as He is seated on a throne in the unseen realm. When He returns to earth with the Kingdom, there will be innumerable family reunions and joyful celebrations like this one. We will see loved ones who battled illness and injury fully healed, those we have lost to death restored to life, and children healthy forever – including those lost through miscarriage or abortion. The joy and tears in this house when the father returned home to see his son fully healed are a foreshadowing of what we will see in the Father’s House at the end of time.

Come back tomorrow to learn about the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing fully healed in Heaven?
