Do You See Hebrews as a Textbook or a Work of Art?

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10

Lesson 5: Understanding Hebrews as a Work of Art

Some books of the Bible read like a legal document—precise, structured, and full of carefully laid-out arguments. Hebrews, however, is different. It doesn’t just tell us truth; it paints it, sings it, and weaves it into a masterpiece that speaks to both the heart and the mind. It’s a book that invites us to analyze and experience the depth of God’s Word.

Hebrews was likely first preached as a sermon and then transcribed into a letter to be shared among churches. Because of this, it’s best approached not like a building with interlocking parts but more like a creative masterpiece—like a painting with colors and hues pulling the tapestry together or a song with a beat and theme that pulls together throughout.

If you’re analytical—an accountant, engineer, or someone who loves structure—you may find books like Romans, Galatians, and Ephesians easier to follow. But if you’re a creative thinker, drawn to music, art, or storytelling, Hebrews might be easier for you to understand.

It’s my hope that these devotionals help bridge the gap between the ancient world of the Old Testament and our modern lives. God’s Word isn’t outdated—it’s eternal. It transcends history and speaks to every generation, including ours.

If you find Hebrews challenging at times, don’t be discouraged. Learning something new always takes time and effort. Like mastering math, learning a new language, or starting a new job, perseverance leads to understanding.
