“In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter.” – Daniel 7:1
We are halfway through the book of Daniel and this is about the time to let you in on a little secret. Most preachers will preach the first six chapters and then quit, and soon you’ll see why. The final six chapters will stretch your imagination and mind, and I’ll strain with human language to explain supernatural things.
There are two basic ways to view human history:
- The future is open and uncertain, and the possibilities are endless. Anything could happen, and everything hangs in a precarious balance.
- The future is closed and is ruled and controlled by God. He is in charge, He is good, and He is working all things for His glory and the good of His people.
The first view may make you stressed and depressed. The second view, however, will allow you to sleep at night, turn your phone off, and live with less anxiety.
The prophetic Word of God shows that He knows and rules the future, which will be important to remember as we study the second half of Daniel. Daniel will get dreams and visions with apocalyptic, prophetic imagery. God looks at everything as history, and prophecy is His way of telling us what He already knows will happen long before it does.
Tomorrow we will take a deeper look at Daniel’s dream.
Which view of human history do you find yourself believing?
