“For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the Lord pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.” – Psalm 135:5-6
Because Jesus Christ is the God who is the Creator of all things, it makes sense that He would also have authority over all that He made. When we read in the opening pages of Genesis that God spoke everything into existence from nothing by the sheer power of His Word, it helps us understand that when Jesus Christ walked on the earth, creation also obeyed His commands – because it knew His voice and honored His sovereign authority.
There are nine occasions reported in the Scriptures where Jesus performed miracles by ruling over nature:
- Jesus turns water into wine (John 2:1-11)
- Jesus causes a big catch of fish (Luke 5:1-11)
- Jesus calms a storm (Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25)
- Jesus feeds the 5,000 (Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-15)
- Jesus causes Peter to walk on water (Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 6:45-52; John 6:15-21)
- Jesus feeds the 4,000 (Matthew 15:32-39; Mark 8:1-9)
- Jesus takes a coin from a fish (Matthew 17:24-27)
- Jesus causes a fig tree to die (Matthew 21:18-22; Mark 11:12-14)
- Jesus causes a big catch of fish (John 21:1-14)
As a general rule, we can categorize these miracles of Jesus ruling over nature as provision for people (which we will study next week) and protection of people (which we will study the following week).
What aspect of nature makes you stand in awe of God’s miraculous power?
