“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality…” – 1 Corinthians 6:9
You are a man. We have officially established that, if God made you a man, you’re a man. If you’re a man, what does God want you to act like? A man. Deuteronomy 22:5 says: “A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.”
God looks down and sees two groups of people: male and female. He wants men to look and act like men and for women to look and act like women. I’m glad my wife, Grace, doesn’t look like me. I’m not complaining at all. If I woke up and looked at myself as the object of my desire for the rest of my days, I’d throw up and go back to bed. I’d think, “My life is over. There’s no reason to continue.”
God’s people do things differently. Even all the way back in Deuteronomy, Moses dealt with drag queens, large men wearing clear heels, and petite women who desperately wanted to grow a beard and could never figure out how to get an Adam’s apple, much to their frustration. Paul says that knowledge puffs up, and people with degrees can be arrogant, wrongly thinking they are progressively trending into new cultural territory not yet explored. God had been dealing with naughty, confused people who don’t understand which bathroom to use since the bad old days. The first time a bearded transgender guy wearing a dress and heels walked into a church I was the senior pastor of was in the mid-1990’s. Anyone who has lived in a bright blue urban dot has seen the future, and it makes every day look like Halloween meets The Purge at an Elton John concert.
Ultimately, God is saying, “Everybody else does things, but my people are going to do things differently.” The word holy means different. As God’s men, we’re going to do things different. We’re going to do sex different, marriage different, parenting different, money different, gender different, everything different than the world that does not know our God. If you’re a Christian, you’re a weirdo, a minority, an outlier, a freak. Wear it proudly; everyone else does. Today, the true rebel is a heterosexual guy who drives a truck to work so he can feed his family and tithe to his church. That’s the only rebellion left, because no one is doing that.
As an homage to the old guys reading this devotional, here’s another verse, and this one is in the King James Version. It says, “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?” (1 Corinthians 6:9) So, who’s not going to make it into Heaven? It continues, “Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind…” Effeminate men will not inherit the Kingdom of God. God made you a man. He made you to act like a man. So, who will inherit the Kingdom of God? Strong, active, and godly men will.
In tomorrow’s devo we will look at how being woke is the counterfeit of being born again.
How are you living differently from the world?
