Have You Been Held Accountable?

“You must warn each other every day, while it is still ‘today,’ so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.” – Hebrews 3:13 (NLT)

The trip from Egypt to the Promised Land (Israel) should have taken roughly 11 days. Deuteronomy 1:1-2 says, “These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness…It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.” Why did a journey that should have taken 11 days last 40 years? Because of hardness of heart.

When our hearts are hard, we are not teachable and refuse to listen to God or any other wisdom for that matter.

When our hearts are hard, we become proud, and rather than following and obeying, we strike off on our own path into folly and harm.

When our hearts are hard, we do not acknowledge our wrongdoing, repent, and turn around but rather keep going in the same wrong direction only to pay painful consequences.

When our hearts are hard, eventually it becomes nearly dead —incapable of feeling much of anything.

Hebrews 3:13 emphasizes the need to “warn each other every day” about being deceived by sin and hardened towards God. For this to happen effectively, we must remain in community with other believers through a local church. Accountability can only happen in the presence of other people who want to see you grow and deepen your roots in the knowledge of God.

Are you a part of a Bible-believing church and do you have a community of believers around you to hold you accountable through prayer and wise counsel? If not, pray for and seek out a church to be a part of.
