How Can God’s Faithfulness Build Your Faith?

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” – Romans 15:4

Lesson 3: Learning from the Past to Strengthen Our Faith

Too many people today treat faith like a DIY project—building their beliefs from scratch instead of standing on the foundation God has already laid. But Hebrews reminds us that we don’t need to reinvent the wheel. God’s faithfulness isn’t a new concept; it’s been proven over and over throughout history. To strengthen our faith, we must look back at how God has worked through His people for generations.

Rather than trying to build our faith from scratch, Hebrews calls us to look back at God’s faithfulness throughout history. The book is filled with references to Old Testament people and events, reminding us that we are part of a salvation story that has been unfolding for thousands of years.

This is why Hebrews repeatedly points to creation, angels, Abraham, Melchizedek, Moses, the prophets, the Exodus, the Sabbath, the tabernacle, the temple, the holy of holies, the sacrificial system, the priesthood, the old covenants and the New Covenant, kings like David, judges like Deborah and Gideon, and the Kingdom of God.

In fact, Hebrews directly quotes the Old Testament at least 47 times.

By anchoring our faith in God’s past works, we gain confidence in His promises for the future.

Faith isn’t about making things up as we go—it’s about trusting in the unshakable foundation God has already established. The same God who led Abraham, Moses, and David is leading you.

Are you learning from His history, or are you trying to start from scratch? Look back at His faithfulness so you can move forward with confidence.
