How Can You Be Godly at Work?

“Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 11:1

The book of Daniel starts with Daniel and his friends being exiled to Babylon. Once they arrive there, these young men are chosen by the king to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans because they have high IQs, come from nobility, and understand how the palace works. They’re also handsome and charming, and they’ll make the king look good. What the nobility doesn’t understand is that it’s also because they’re filled with the Spirit of God. Daniel’s place of work is his place of witness, as ours should be as well.

There are four things to notice in Daniel 1:

  1. Counterfeit: The spirit of Babylon is always working on a counterfeit. The food and wine that the king wants Daniel and his friends to eat is counterfeit communion. All of our problems started in Genesis 3 when our first parents ate a meal with Satan and didn’t invite God.
  1. Character: Daniel is a man of character and disagrees in an agreeable way. He’s so courteous that those who were overseeing him appreciate him, like him, and have compassion for him.
  1. Control: Daniel has two choices in the moment: try to control the future or relinquish control to God and trust Him to control the future. Ultimately, Daniel doesn’t know what will happen, but he does know he’ll remain loyal to the Lord.
  1. Commitment: Daniel has the resolve to do what’s right even if everything goes wrong. Daniel’s treasure on earth was nothing, but his treasure in Heaven was great.

In tomorrow’s devotional, we will look at the importance of perseverance.

How are you doing with your character, control, and commitments both at work and at home?
