How Do Demonic Spirits Work in Nations?

“And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: ‘Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.’” – Revelation 17:5

When the same evils happen in different nations and generations, how can those similarities be explained since the political leaders are different? Although people come and go, the demons working through them remain the same. Although we have new days, we are dealing with old demons.

As we have learned, the first attempt at globalism was in ancient Babel. Babylon is the same place where the people came from 1,500 years later to invade Jerusalem and lay siege to God’s city. They killed and enslaved God’s people, including Daniel, taking them captive as prisoners of war. In Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar built a large statue like the Tower of Babel so that everyone could worship him as a counterfeit god (Daniel 3:1-7). The point is this: we keep seeing the same things happen from one generation to the next. Why? Because people change, but demons don’t. Nations change, but demons don’t. Demons will work through one person or one government, and when that person or government transitions, the new person or government is overtaken by the same demon. Genesis and Daniel are not just about what happened – they’re about what always happens. Ultimately, the same spirits at work in their day are at work in our own day.

For the original readers of Daniel, the nations and kings would be as familiar to us as the high-profile nations and political leaders on the world stage that dominate our nightly news. As a bit of a history lesson to set the stage for the book of Daniel, Babylon and the Babylonians are also called Chaldea and the Chaldeans throughout the Bible. Babylon is an ancient nation, but it’s important to note that behind Babylon was the demonic spirit of Babylon. In fact, Nebuchadnezzar saw himself as the king over the globe, sending out decrees, saying in Daniel 4:1, “…to all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth…”

God creates a Kingdom that is called His bride. Satan counterfeits with a kingdom that is called Babylon, the “mother of prostitutes.” (Revelation 17:5) The demonic spirit of Babylon is at work in every nation and generation. For this reason, the last book of the Bible, Revelation, is closely connected to Daniel, as they both have prophecies about the end of human history and the beginning of eternity with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Long after the nation of Babylon had ceased to exist, Revelation reveals that the demonic spirit of Babylon remains at work in the world.

  • Revelation 14:8: Another angel, a second, followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality.”
  • Revelation 16:19: The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God remembered Babylon the great, to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath.
  • Revelation 17:5: …on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.”
  • Revelation 18:1-2: …I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory. And he called out with a mighty voice, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.”
  • Revelation 18:10: They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, “Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.”
  • Revelation 18:21: Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and will be found no more…”

Worldly cultures can change your name, but only God can change your nature. It doesn’t matter what others put on you; it only matters that God’s Spirit is in you. Now that we know what the spirit of Babylon is, we will look at the seven signs of this demonic spirit in our world tomorrow.

Take some time today to thank God for putting His Spirit within you and ask Him for the strength and perseverance to withstand the spirit of Babylon.
