Is Jesus an Angel?

“…having become as much superior to angels as the name he [Jesus] has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” – Hebrews 1:4

Jesus is also compared to, and shown to be superior in every way to, angels. The Bible has a great deal to say about spiritual beings, speaking of them as angels, watchers, holy ones, the host of Heaven, sons of God, divine assembly, the gods, morning stars, glorious ones, and the armies of Heaven (Daniel 4:17; Psalm 89:5; Deuteronomy 4:19–20; 1 Kings 22:19; 1 Samuel 1:11; Job 1:6, 38:7; Deuteronomy 32:8–9; Psalm 82:1,6, 89:6; Ezekiel 28:2; Job 38:7; 2 Peter 2:10; Jude 8; Revelation 19:14).

To ensure that we do not mistake Jesus for an angel, the author of Hebrews then goes to great lengths to explain how Jesus is not an angel. For starters, angels are created by God and Jesus is their Creator God. Furthermore, no angel is the very Son of God, appointed to co-rule and reign from the throne of glory in the unseen realm at the right hand of God the Father. Lastly, angels do not share the same divine attributes of the Father like Jesus Christ since they are not Creator, all-knowing, all-powerful, all-present, unchangeable, sovereign, or to be worshiped.

Practically speaking, this all means that Jesus Christ is not an angel. Sadly, cults like the Jehovah’s Witnesses teach this very lie. Furthermore, we are to trust Jesus more than angels, as some fallen angels that have become demons used lies to found cults like Mormonism (the demon Moroni masquerading as an angel) and false religions like Islam (a demon masquerading as Gabriel). Lastly, we should not worship or become overly enamored with angels, as is common in pagan spiritualities, including the New Age, along with esoteric spirituality. Sadly, in every generation, there are people who do not want to be under God’s authority but still want to be spiritual. The thought of having a personal guardian angel, or being able to exercise spiritual authority by deploying angels to obey our requests, is a bit like having divine staff at our service. This, tragically, leaves people who are seeking spirits but not the Holy Spirit open to demonic counterfeits and dark ways of manipulating the spirit realm with such things as witchcraft, sorcery, divination, and magic. We don’t need any of these things; all we need is Jesus! That is the constant drumbeat of Hebrews.

Come back tomorrow as we discuss where Jesus is right now.

Have you ever sought spiritual wisdom from sources other than God or do you know someone who has or is currently doing so? Take some time to pray against demonic counterfeits in your or their lives and for God’s truth to be revealed.
