Is Your Heart Hardened Toward God?

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”—Hebrews 3:15

Sometimes love speaks loudest through warning. Hebrews doesn’t sugarcoat the stakes—it sounds the alarm. Like a siren before a storm, it calls out to those drifting, pretending, or walking away from the faith. This isn’t just about going to church; it’s about truly belonging to Jesus. And when the fire of testing comes, only the true believers will remain.

One of the most sobering warnings in the Bible comes straight out of Hebrews. Over and over—like a severe weather alert buzzing on your phone—it grabs our attention. The message is clear: danger is coming for those who harden their hearts and defy God.

This warning targets people who once looked like believers. They went to church, identified as Christians, and even suffered for their faith. Some gave generously and visited prisoners. But somewhere along the line, they walked away from Christ and His Church. Whether they were truly saved or not is God’s call. Our job is to examine ourselves—honestly and humbly—to see if our faith is genuine or just a Sunday show. Because for those who walk away, the warning is brutal:

“…a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries… How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God…” (Hebrews 10:27, 29-31)

Even with this heavy warning, Hebrews doesn’t leave us hopeless. God’s heart is always open to the one who returns. This section of Hebrews ends with a call to endure and a promise of reward:

“Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward… we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.” (Hebrews 10:35-39)

This is the dividing line between an apostate and a prodigal. Both walk away—but only one comes back. In every church, there are people like Peter and people like Judas. Both failed. Both left. But only one repented. Peter wept and returned to Jesus, proving his faith was real. Judas walked into the dark—and stayed there. Peter didn’t come back to be saved. He came back because he was saved.

If God is warning you today, what needs to change before it’s too late?
