“Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.” – Luke 7:7
The man, who was sick and dying in this scene, was a humble, hardworking servant who was widely loved in the community. Most likely, every medical attempt had been made to restore the man to health, with no success.
The centurion mentioned was an officer in the Roman army and would have commanded a fighting unit of around 80 men. The Romans were considered foreign oppressors by the Jews in that day, yet Jesus was willing to heal and serve the centurion’s servant.
Here, Jesus is revealed as the God of all nations, who is good to all. What is highlighted in this story is the centurion’s “faith.” The man did not need Jesus to come to his home to heal and trusted that, because of His authority, Jesus could heal from a distance.
The man believed Jesus’ word and went home in faith, confident the servant would be healed, which is precisely what happened. Today, Jesus continues to heal from a distance by the authority of His word. We can trust that what He says will come to pass and we should wait with anticipation for His triumphant return to make all things new.
Come back tomorrow to discuss the counterfeit miracles seen throughout the Old and New Testaments.
Take some time to worship Jesus for His consistent and trustworthy nature.
