“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” – Hebrews 4:15
All the parts of the Day of Atonement are a foreshadow for the coming of Jesus Christ, our High Priest.
It is Jesus who mediates between unholy people and our holy God!
It is Jesus who is the sinless substitute that died a bloody death in our place for our sins!
It is Jesus who is the scapegoat who takes our sins away to be remembered by God no more!
Subsequently, only by rightly understanding the function of the two goats is the atonement fully appreciated.
Although there were two goats, there was only one slaughter. The first goat was slaughtered for the propitiation of sin. The second goat was not slaughtered but rather sent away with sin, showing the cleansing expiation from sin.
Both great themes, propitiation and expiation, will be further explored later in this devotional series.
In tomorrow’s devotional, we will dive deeper into the meaning of the word “atonement.”
Do you feel you have a strong understanding of these words “propitiation” and “expiation”? If not, I would encourage you to read Leviticus 16 in its entirety to gain a more wholistic understanding of what they represent.
