Unconventional Healing

“They were astonished beyond measure, saying, ‘He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.’” – Mark 7:37

In Isaiah 35:4-6, it was prophesied that “‘Behold, your God will come…He will come and save you.’ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.” In this miracle scene, that promise is fulfilled. This man is a Gentile, not one of God’s people, yet Jesus Christ heals him in response to being desperately begged to lay hands on the man and heal him.

In looking to Heaven, Jesus was making it clear that He was inviting the Kingdom down to earth to make this a Thin Place of healing for this man. Why Jesus put His fingers in the man’s ears, spit, and touched the man’s tongue are all mysteries. Jesus does not heal the same way twice and does not often explain why He does things the way He does when healing someone. In the realm of magic and demonic superstitious counterfeit miracles, there is usually a formula that the practitioners follow. Perhaps Jesus does not provide any repeatable healing pattern so that we are unable to try and manipulate the unseen realm through repeatable patterns.

Lastly, even though He told those present to keep the healing quiet, the crowds scattered to tell everyone about Jesus, causing His fame and crowds to grow.

Tomorrow’s devotional will look at the healing of 10 lepers.

Have you seen Jesus heal you or someone you know in an unconventional way?
