What Can You Learn from Old Testament Heroes?

“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” – Romans 8:16-17

Lesson 4: Connecting with Our Spiritual Family

When you think about your family history, you might picture grandparents, great-grandparents, or distant relatives whose lives shaped your own. But what if your spiritual family tree stretched back even further—to the heroes of the Old Testament? Hebrews reminds us that, through Christ, we are part of God’s Forever Family, connected to the faithful believers who came before us. Their stories aren’t just ancient history—they are part of our story.

Too often, we see Old Testament figures as distant and irrelevant to our lives today. But Hebrews challenges us to see them through God’s perspective—as our spiritual ancestors. Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, and Samuel aren’t just historical names; they are part of the same family of faith we belong to.

If we worship the same God they did, then their journeys of faith should inspire and guide us today. Their struggles, victories, and trust in God serve as powerful lessons—not just for history but for our own walk with Him.

The same God who guided Abraham, strengthened Moses, and empowered David is at work in your life today. Their faith wasn’t just for their time—it’s an inheritance for all of God’s children, including you.

Are you learning from your spiritual family or treating them like strangers? Let their stories strengthen your faith and inspire you to walk boldly in obedience to the God who never changes.
