“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” – Hebrews 11:3
Regarding moral reasoning, it follows that the sources of authority, reality, and morality are vastly different between Western and Eastern minds.
In the West, the highest authority is internal (what the individual feels, thinks, desires, or prefers) and not external (parents, laws, Scripture, people in authority, or God). In the West, reality is once again based upon the individual, not what people in previous generations or those currently alive agree is truly real.
This is perhaps nowhere more obvious than in the explosion of transgenderism, where people increasingly report that they were born in the wrong body. They claim that who they are internally does not correlate with who they are externally, and they were “born in the wrong body.” To arrive at this denial of reality requires ignoring virtually all of human historical belief about sex, gender, and sexuality, along with everything the Bible has ever said about these matters, as well as the fact that there are binary and fixed physical, hormonal, and biological differences between males and females.
In the face of this sin, Hebrews keeps bringing us back to the Old Testament as God’s perfect and pure Word. Hebrews is also clear that the highest authority is external to us and unchanging by us. The following Scriptures in Hebrews make this theme clear:
- Hebrews 1:3 – …he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
- Hebrews 4:12 – For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
- Hebrews 5:13 – the word of righteousness…
- Hebrews 6:5 – …the goodness of the word of God…
- Hebrews 11:3 – …the universe was created by the word of God…
- Hebrews 13:7 – Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God.
- Hebrews 13:22 – I appeal to you, brothers, bear with my word of exhortation…
In tomorrow’s devo we will discuss the potential cure of shallow Christianity.
Do you truly believe that God’s Word is the highest authority in your life? Why or why not?
