What’s the Significance of Your Feelings?

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” – Proverbs 4:23

Imagine that you live downstream from a toxic industrial plant that continually pollutes the water that runs through your property. What if you decided it was time to begin a cleanup effort? Where would you begin?

Obviously, starting on your property, and seeking to continually clean the water, would be a foolish waste of time. The only hope to cause real change would be to start upstream at the headwaters of the problem.

Our life is a lot like this story. Our behavior is downstream. Our heart is upstream. When the Bible speaks of our heart roughly 900 times, it is referring to the upstream emotional center from which floods our feelings, values, beliefs, decisions, and behaviors.

Simply stated, the heart is upstream, and the rest of life is downstream. As Proverbs 4:23 says, we must guard our hearts because it is the starting point for the rest of our life.

How are you guarding your heart from the toxic things of this world? Is there anything you need to change to better guard your heart?
