Who is Moses?

“…[Jesus] who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.” – Hebrews 3:2

In the Bible, there are people who loom so large that it’s hard to overstate the impact of their life. Moses is one of those men. He is referred to or alluded to roughly 800 times in the Bible.

Moses’ life began with his life being spared. Later, God speaks to him through a burning bush, calling him into ministry. God works through Moses to take down the Egyptian empire with 10 plagues.

God then uses Moses to liberate His people and parts the Red Sea to deliver them. Moses receives the 10 Commandments from God Himself. Moses then destroys the golden calf to defend God’s honor. God uses Moses to help build the tabernacle to house His presence.

Lastly, Moses pens the first five books of the Bible, giving us “the law,” while leading God’s people to the edge of the Promised Land.

Moses’ life is so epic that numerous major motion pictures have been made, along with many televised biographical series examining his life, as even non-religious people find him fascinating. Furthermore, “Moses (c. 1400 BCE) is considered one of the most important religious leaders in world history. He is claimed by the religions of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Bahai as an important prophet of God and the founder of monotheistic belief.” (1)

A Bible Dictionary describes Moses as,

The man chosen by God to lead the Hebrew people out of Egyptian bondage, to preside over the Sinai ceremony constituting those people as the people of God, and to lead the Hebrew people to the promised land. As such, Moses is arguably the most prominent person in the Hebrew Bible, and he looms large in early Jewish and Christian writings. (2)

In tomorrow’s devotional we will look at the relationship between Moses and Jesus.

Moses was a great leader of God’s people. Who have you known that was a great leader of God’s people?
