How Do I Overcome Suffering and Temptation?

[gtranslate]

Are you a friend of God, or are you still His enemy? Jesus didn't die on the cross to save us from sin alone. He saved us from the consequences of sin, which is Hell and God's eternal wrath. Are you right with God? Have you been reconciled to Him?

NOTES:

How do I overcome suffering and temptation? Hebrews 2:10-18

Please stand for the reading of God’s Word

Hebrews 2:10-18 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Monsoon Storms Season – & shallow roots analogy

1.    Suffering –physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial, relational

7 Ways Jesus’ Helps You Overcome Suffering and Temptation

#1. Be true to Jesus Christ, not yourself!

Hebrews 2:10 [Jesus Christ is] …he, for whom and by whom all things exist

  • Identity Infatuation (personality tests, horoscope sign)
  • #1. Who is God        #2. Who does God say I am?

Big??? 1. Where do I come from? 2. Why am I here? 3. Where do I go when I die?

= stay true to my Lord = my decisions are made by my Bible

#2. Jesus has a purpose for pain!

Hebrews 2:10 …the founder of…salvation [was made] perfect through suffering.

  1. Much of our suffering is caused by, or at least contributed to by our sin
  2. God has never sinned, and does not have to endure any suffering
  3. Who would you suffer & die for? (Family? Friend? Stranger? Enemy?)
  4. Jesus Christ chose to suffer for your salvation

“perfect through suffering” – 2 kinds learning 1. Theoretical 2. Experiential

Suffering: 1. Appreciate Jesus 2. Become like Jesus 3. Help others suffering

#3. Jesus will get you to glory!

Hebrews 2:10-11 bringing many sons to glory… he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source.

  • There is a perfect version of you God will not stop working on until He’s finished

The Salvation Process (Hebrews 2:10-11)

  1. “salvation” 2. “sanctified”     3. “glory”
  • Satan always wants to remind you of your past
  • God always wants to remind you of your future (Word Truth vs Lies)

#4. Jesus takes your shame!

Hebrews 2:11-13 he is not ashamed to call them brothers…

Shame begins with sin in Genesis 3 (covering up, hiding who you are)

1.    Shame – from what you have done

2.    Shame – from what they have done

  1. Satan uses shame to accuse & condemn you = mental health/isolation (“you”)
  2. People use shame to abuse & control you (Cancel Culture)

Hebrews 12:2 “Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame…”

  • Often sexual – my testimony

= Shame comes on you, wants live in you. Only Jesus can take off! (garbage can)

#5. Jesus died to defeat death, and deliver you from Satan and slavery!

Hebrews 2:14-15 …in flesh and blood, he [Jesus] himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

·         You either belong to Satan or Jesus

Jesus took on a body, tempted suffered, & died = GREAT EXCHANGE!

Satan – God              Death – Life              Fear – Faith              Slavery – Freedom

=4 Declarations

#6. Jesus blesses you more than the angels!

Hebrews 2:16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

  • Angels don’t get grace or salvation (we are amazed angels, they amazed @ us)

#7. Jesus your high priest is available right now!

Hebrews 2:17 …he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he

might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

PRIEST – Major Hebrews theme – “priest”, “High Priest” (ch’s 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,13)

  • Started w/Aaron = family ministry
  • Mediator – Holy God & unholy people
  • SIN: offer sacrifices as substitute for sinners

-Yom Kippur – Day of Atonement – The Day (Leviticus)

-Atonement: “at-one-meant” – 100X NT

2 unblemished goats

  1. Substitute goat (“propitiation” – 4x NT) COMMUNION
  2. Scapegoat (expiation)

Jesus – 1. Temple 2. High Priest 3. Substitution (blood/death) 4. Scapegoat

  1. CROSSS: Jesus forgave your
  2. TODAY: Jesus lives intercede “high priest)– “suffered”; “tempted”; “able to help”
