SON: Worship Your Father

In this sermon from Act Like a Man: Real Men 101, Pastor Mark shows that everyone everywhere is always worshipping something and that, as children of God, men (and women) are called to worship their Heavenly Father by the Spirit through the Son.

SON: Worship Your Father

-Like Father, like son

-What is true with our physical fathers is true with our spiritual father

God and Satan are Fathers with Sons

1 John 3:10 it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil

God is a Father with sons

  • OT – lots of fathers & genealogies, 15X in reference nation Israel
  • Jesus Revolutionary Word – 65X Matt-Lk; 100+X John
  • Zero indication Jews used Father before Jesus
  • Abba – not Daddy but Father (young & old children)

Satan is a Father with sons

John 8:44You are of your father the devil, & your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, & does not stand in the truth…he is a liar and the father of lies.

What is worship?

Hebrews 13:15–16 Through him [the Son of God] then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Not just a music genre. Does not start & stop. Not just in church.

  • Worship is internal and external
  • Worship is private and public
  • Worship is singing and living

Everyone everywhere is always worshipping

Start in Genesis 1:26-28 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion…So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion…”

= mirror/image (God or someone/something else)

1st 2 commandments – 1 God, worship Him alone & nothing/no one else

  1. Who/what weighs heaviest in your life?
  2. Who/what do you make sacrifices for (time, money, energy, thought, etc.)?

= worship into trouble (slavery to a master); worship out (freedom to our Father)

=Workaholic. Alcoholic. Rage-a-holic. Control freak.

Christian worship by the Spirit, through the Son, to the Father

John 4:23 true worshipers…worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

What does this look like? Men becoming like Jesus Christ (Lion & Lamb)

  • 2 Corinthians 4:4 Christ…the image of God.
  • Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God…
  • John 14:9 Jesus said…Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

=We become what we worship (people pleasing/fear of man)

Why do men not worship in church?

#1. Spiritual

  1. Satan encourages androgyny (Galatia)
  2. Many pastors not masculine (lamb not lion) & appeal to older women not younger men
  3. Least masculine public leader the church usually worship leader (unlike David)

#2. Practical

  1. Men in military have brotherhood, strong male leadership
  2. Post Wars men did not go to church for so long it became effeminate in style and culture
  3. End WW II 1945 US Population 140 million, over 12 million in military & most deployed

= 9% total US Population

  1. Women more comfortable in masculine environment than men in feminine environment
  2. Most men are not emotionally healthy but worship in the Spirit brings emotional health
