Why is God angry with shallow Christians? Hebrews 2:1-9 (sermon #2)

= Warning – Phone Alert

5 Warning Passages in Hebrews: (2:1–4, 3:7-4:13, 5:11-6:12, 10:19-39, 12:14-29)

Please stand for the reading of God’s Word [not lower third, 1 slide]

Hebrews 2:1–9 2 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.  5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 It has been testified somewhere [Psalm 8:4-6], “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Are you making God angry by drifting away from Christ and Christianity?

Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

  • “drift” – ancient word for boating (1. DRIVE or 2. DRIFT) = against current

Personal Drift (Boating: Drive or Drift. GO AGAINST CURRENT)

  1. Not Non-XN
  2. Not New-XN
  3. Prodigal – behavior
  4. Apostate – belief

1. Your unrepentant sin

2. Someone you love has unrepentant sin

                        3. Bitterness & church hurt (deconstructionists) – demonic foothold

? Change Bible, or Bible changes you?

Organizational Drift

Bible Encyc, “Turning against God, as evidenced by abandonment & repudiation of former beliefs. The term generally refers to a deliberate renouncing of the faith by a once sincere believer rather than a state of ignorance or mistaken knowledge.”

-Bible Coll, Seminaries, Denom’s, church networks, churches =apostasy

-Rainbow flag; BLM w/o repenting; pro-abortion; interfaith, same sex marriage

-Issues – Bible perfect, human nature, tolerance v repentance, sex/gender, wrath God

Like Judas – antichrist but w/Christ & Christians

If your church has left God, YOU MUST LEAVE YOUR CHURCH!

Do you fear the Lord, or is God angry with you?

Hebrews 2:2-3 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

“angels” -300x; 90% books

1.    Not fallen – sent by God to communicate, then Jesus came instead!

2.    Fallen – “every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution”

=  HELL: Zero angels forgiven/saved

  • Are you rejecting & neglecting Jesus Christ
  • If so, you are storing up the wrath of God

=USING GOD’S GRACE VS ABUSING GOD’S GRACE

-Friend Pastor “God’s stuck w/me”. (hell will have an entire section for pastors)

Are you humble, or is God angry with you?

Hebrews 2:6 “What is man, that you are mindful of him…?”

  • MIND – pride vs humility

“I think” or “I feel” or “my truth” = vs God’s perspective (created us & we rebel in mind)

6 reasons you should never drift from Christ and Christianity! [lower third]

1.    Jesus Christ will punish you in hell if you drift from Him. Hebrews 2:2-3 every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

Revelation 14:10-11 he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night,

2.    Jesus Christ is God who came to tell us who He is, and save us from sin. Hebrews 2:3 It [the gospel] was declared at first by the Lord,

3.    Jesus Christ showed He is God with miracles. Hebrews 2:4 God…bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles

4.    Jesus Christ will rule everyone and everywhere forever. Hebrews 2:7-8 you have crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.

5.    Jesus Christ has humbled Himself and deserves all glory. Hebrews 2:9 him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor…

6.    Jesus Christ died to save you from the wrath of God. Hebrews 2:9 suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Band Up. Pray. Prayer & Communion (1:6 “all the angels worship Him”)
