How Do We Worship in Church?

1.    Our view of “normal” church comes from our experience

2.    Catholic (kneel & comm) Evangelical (Bible & relationships); Charismatic/Pentecostal (worship & prayer – emotional passionate); Seeker (hospitality -new & non XN)

What is Worship?

Hebrews 13:15–16: “[Adoration] Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. [Action] Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

  1. Adoration/Declaring God (up)             =internal (God sees)               – worship
  2. Action/Doing Good (out)                     = external (others see)           – witness

God worships

John 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

  • Glory/Glorify = reflected radiance, honor/prestige,
  • Trinity = unceasing 1. Adoration         2. Action

Divine Beings and Departed Believers Worship in Heaven

Revelation 4:2–11 I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. ..Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders..From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God…around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures…each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”…the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11  “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

Worship in Heaven Comes to the Church

Acts 1:8, 2:1-4 you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”…

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…

-Pentecost = 50, 50 days after Passover, 10 days after Jesus ascension

Page 297 The Unseen Realm by Michael Heiser is a detailed reasoning for Divine Counsel visitation

-HS down “from Heaven”

Figurative language “like…wind”; “as of fire”

  • Wind = POWER (Jn 3 – e.g. sail, kite)
  • Fire – PASSION
  • “filled w/the Holy Spirit” – God-breathed his life into Adam – breath
  1. -Baptism once @ conversation
  2. -Filled/poured/received with Spirit – many times

We are to be like a boat, in the world but not of it, surrounded by the world filled w/Spirit

Don’t Worship God How He Forbids

Deuteronomy 12:2–4 2 You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. 3 You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces their pillars and burn their Asherim with fire. You shall chop down the carved images of their gods and destroy their name out of that place. 4 You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way.

  • NOT spiritual, but Spirit-filled
  • Holy = set apart, different

=God sets our relational boundaries
