After another argument over a small issue while on vacation, I (Grace) told Mark that he kept bring up things for which I had apologized and repented. I kindly asked him to pray about whether he was keeping record of wrong. He said he would pray about it and needed a time of solitude to think.
After being gone several hours, Mark returned with a small, vintage green shovel that had a Mason jar attached to the front. Being the visual man he is, he had gone to a craft fair (this is genuinely loving) and an old café to find an old school paper tablet that the waitresses would write your order and bill on.
Mark wrote, “Grace Driscoll’s past debt is paid in full, and the past will no longer be dug up! Romans 8:1, Philippians 3:13-14”.
This signified that he had dug up his bitterness and forgiven me for good. I hung it up in our bathroom between our sinks, and it’s the first thing we see to start every day. Sometimes a visual reminder can help us not to fall back into old patterns.
What can you and your spouse do to remind each other to forgive and that bitterness from past offenses has been “dug up” for good?
