Are You a Real Man?

“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children…” – Proverbs 13:22

In today’s devotional, I want to tell you a secret: Being a man of God is not hard; it’s impossible. An entire generation of young men is living with their mother rather than moving out or moving in with their girlfriend, who makes more money, rather than getting a career job to buy her a house and make her a wife, because they see that being a man is a lot of hard work.

One statistic would be funny if it were not true. In Italy, 72.6% of men ages 18-34 live with their parents. A 75-year-old woman had to get an attorney to evict her sons, ages 40 and 42, who refused to pay for anything, do any chores, or get a job. This is such a widespread problem that a category of men is referred to as “bamboccioni” (big babies). (1)

It’s easier to play video games, watch porn, eat ice cream for breakfast, masturbate, and take a nap than to be a man. This is easier, but not better. The Holy Spirit will never show up to help you do any of those things because they are stupid and wrong. However, if you lean into the impossible task of growing and maturing as a man until you stand before your Maker to get your life’s performance review, the Holy Spirit will show up every day to help you. God does not anoint boys who can shave. God only anoints sons determined to be men of God. You can have His anointing or your comfort, but you cannot have both.

Proverbs 13:22 says, “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children…” No matter what life stage you are in, this should be your goal. Get up every day thinking about both your life and your legacy. What legacy will you leave financially, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually?  Who will be standing on your shoulders to build upon what you have given them? Will your sons and grandsons be better, godlier, healthier men than you? This is what I think about every day and pray you do the same.

You are a son of God, and you are here with a purpose. Generations are depending on you. Women and children, many of whom are not yet even born, need you to be the man God has created and called you to be. No one can replace you. If this is what you commit to, the Father will help you, Jesus will lead you, and the Spirit will anoint you with the power you need to live your life and leave your legacy! He will also empower you to run your race. This is what we will discuss tomorrow.

In what area(s) of your life do you need wisdom from other guys? Who could help meet this need?
