Jude 7 – …just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
There has long been a debate that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is historical fiction. However, the archaeological evidence points to God destroying both towns and the surrounding areas for sexual sin. In the non-Christian Scientific Reports, it was first reported that archaeology Professor James Kennett, from the University of California at Santa Barbara, had found evidence of the destruction from the same time as the biblical account, in the same region, with the same devastation. Here is what was reported, “The biblical ‘sin cities’ of Sodom and Gomorrah could have been destroyed by a meteor ‘cloudburst’ that incinerated all 8,000 inhabitants…The giant space rock exploded over the town…creating a fireball…Now there seems to be hard evidence that a ‘heavenly event’ really did happen around that time. The cosmic calamity laid waste to the Jordan River Valley’s northern shore, razing a huge 100-acre city to the ground. It also exterminated other cities and multiple small villages. There would have been no survivors…Detonation occurred about 2.5 miles above the ground. Even at that distance, the blast created a 740 mph shock wave…Human remains suggested they had been blown up or incinerated, with extreme disarticulation and fragmentation of bones. ‘We saw evidence for temperatures greater than 2,000 degrees Celsius,’ says study lead author Professor James Kennett of the University of California at Santa Barbara…An international team also found building materials and pottery shards melted into glass. Mud bricks had heat bubbles. These are all indications of unusually high temperatures, which would have occurred during the biblical account of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. There was no man-made technology at the time that could have produced such astonishing damage…’There is evidence of a large cosmic fireball, close to Tall el-Hammam,’ says Prof. Kennett. He likens the extraordinary event to the 1908 Tunguska Event when a 12 megaton meteor destroyed 80 million trees across 830 square miles of eastern Siberia…” (3)
Jude closes his stern warning against living in opposition to God by referring to a story from outside the Bible about people who acted like Satan, justified their rejection of God and godly authority, blasphemed the messengers of God, and were referred to as “unreasoning animals” who cannot be persuaded with wisdom or truth but are simply hell bent on destruction. Their root issues are, like Satan, independence and pride. Independent of God and godly authority and so proud as to rely on their own imagination that permits them to “defile the flesh” with sexual sin, they think they are superior to even the archangel Michael. He and Gabriel are the only two named holy angels in the Bible, and even Michael honored Satan, while demonic deceivers won’t even honor the Lord.
