When does human life begin?

Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

When life begins is one of the big debates in our culture and, truthfully, it’s not a debate.

Life begins at conception. This really isn’t a medical issue, it’s a political issue.

Medically, it’s incontrovertible. Life begins at conception. A fertilized egg produces a zygote – that’s a human being with its own genetic identity. Without someone killing it or a tragic miscarriage, that person will grow up to walk into the world and to live as a fully functioning human being.

We now know this because of ultrasound technology. You can see the womb where God is fearfully and wonderfully knitting life together. We know this, as well, from a legal standpoint. If a woman is pregnant and something happens to her and she miscarries, the person who caused that loss of life can be charged with murder. We even know this because we can do surgery in utero to repair certain difficulties that a pre-born child might have because it’s very much a human life.

When does human life begin? It begins at conception. We all know this and some of us just don’t like it.
