Who is Worse Than an Unbeliever?

“But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” 1 Timothy 5:8

We live in a day where we have men trying to remain in a childhood state of dependency on their mother and/or the government, and it’s ungodly. Ultimately, the kind of government we have doesn’t redistribute wealth; it redistributes poverty, and it disincentivizes people from working. There’s an entitlement mentality that leads to complete devolution of men and destruction of society. The Bible tells us to not feed guys who won’t work (2 Thessalonians 3:6-10). Proverbs talks about the sluggard, a man who literally is like a slug – squishy, slow, and unproductive. Proverbs 16:26 (NIV) also says, “The appetite of laborers works for them; their hunger drives them on.”

I’ll be honest. When I see guys panhandling, sitting on the street corner asking for money, I think, “You’re standing in front of 27 businesses that are all hiring because nobody goes to work.” This seems obvious, but maybe they can put the sign down and go get a job.

Here’s a punch in the mouth verse. 1 Timothy 5:8 says, “if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” A Christian man who doesn’t work is worse than a non-Christian. This is about as strong of a word as can be. We live in a world where men are not feeding their wives and children, and you cannot create a government big enough to make up for those miserable men. Simply reading this Scripture without comment got me kicked off TikTok and was viewed hundreds of thousands of times, likely by young men who were triggered by the thought of working while using the Wi-Fi in their mom’s basement where they live.

Our culture is in crisis, and the only solution is better men. God made men to glorify Him by marrying a woman, having children, and providing for the needs of his family in every way – spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally. This responsibility is a heavy load to carry, but that’s why God made men strong. Tomorrow we will discuss why men need more responsibility.
