While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.” Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed. This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee. (John 4:51–54)
You are a person in two parts. You have an outer life that includes your physical body; and you have an inner life that includes such things as your emotional heart and spiritual soul. Both parts of you were made by God, belong to God, and need God.
Most people are far more aware of the needs of their outer life than their inner life. Perhaps this is because we can see our body in a way that only God can see our soul.
Jesus’ first miracle in John’s Gospel is the healing of a dying little boy. Jesus promised that the son would be healed. In faith, the father believed Him and ventured 18 miles home only to discover that his son was healed by the power of God’s Word from a distance at the moment that Jesus pronounced healing.
What is often overlooked are the additional healings that took place in the entire household. The little boy had his outer life healed by Jesus physically, while the father and rest of the household had their inner lives healed by Jesus spiritually.
Just as you can have a broken bone, you can also have a broken heart. Just as you can have a sick body that is dying, you can also have a sick soul that is dead to God. In this report, we learn that Jesus’ ministry includes both inner and outer healing. Jesus can heal your body. Jesus can also heal your hurt emotional life, broken heart, and spiritual confusion. There truly is no one who can do all that Jesus can do.
