Will Jesus Burn Evildoers Like in the Story of Elijah?

Will Jesus burn evildoers today like in the story of Elijah? In a time when compromise and tolerance is just as prevalent as in Elijah's day, you may start to wonder if, how, and when evildoers will be stopped. In this sermon from 2 Kings 1, Pastor Mark preaches on God's active vs passive wrath, options for what happens when you die, and the good news that everything will be perfect in the end once King Jesus returns.

Will Jesus Burn Evildoers Like in the Story of Elijah? #11 (2 Kings 1:1-18)

  • Israel – est GOD; smaller all 50 states, size/pop = NJ surrounded by enemies forever
  • Jesus plan – Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, Ends Earth
  • Evil sought to overtake every family, church, politics, educ, ent, $ – not move or tolerate
  • Patience of God – 6 Generations, 3.5 yrs drought, fire from Heaven, Prophet of God

Neutral is not possible in a culture war

1 Kings 1:1 After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.

Culture War – internal & external

1)    Descended Lot & daughter

2)    Moabites – subdued by King David, (2 Samuel 8:2,12)

3)    Solomon took wives & worship Chemosh/Baal Israel = idolatry &  human sacrifice (2 K 3:27)

=1 Ki 11:9 the Lord was angry w/Solomon” = God took Kingdom (1 Kgs 11:1, 7, 33)

-Matt. 12:30 “Whoever is not with me is against me…”

A little compromise over a long time is a big problem

2 Kings 1:2 Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them, “Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this sickness.” 3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? 4 Now therefore thus says the LORD, You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’ ” So Elijah went. 5 The messengers returned to the king, and he said to them, “Why have you returned?” 6 And they said to him, “There came a man to meet us, and said to us, ‘Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him, Thus says the LORD, Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’ ” 7 He said to them, “What kind of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things?” 8 They answered him, “He wore a garment of hair, with a belt of leather about his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”

  1. King Ahaziah – Ahab & Jezebel dead = son king
  2. Injured, doesn’t pray to God or ask believers to pray
  3. Seeks “Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron”, = “lord of the flies = local Baal of healing

Ekron = nearly 2 dozen X Bible, all negative, home demon God Ekron & Philistines

  1. mi SW Jerusalem – constant enemy

= Matt. 12:22-24 Jesus healed by Beelzebul = Greek form “Baal-zebub”. DELIVERANCE

Tolerance of demonic = longstanding problem = Love family. Loyalty to GOD alone!

  • Centuries earlier – God’s people defeated & occupied but did not pull the root of evil

Deut 18:10-12 (NLT), “never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering…do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord….” = KEEP MOVING LINE

Elijah the Prophet                 1) Family?                   2). History?                 3). Credentials?

Eli “strength of the Lord”; Jah”my God is Jehovah”  =“I live by the strength of the Lord my God”

4). Hometown? “Tisbhe (unknown) in Gilead” (remote/rugged mountain men  = ALONE/RIP

-Matt 3:4 “John [Baptizer] wore a garment of camel’s hair & a leather belt around his waist..”

1. LOVE FAMILY. 2. LOYALTY TO GOD

= ?what even small things need removal? (idols, gifts, religious icons, lover momentos)

Not everyone gets saved

2 Kings 1:9 Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty men with his fifty. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, “O man of God, the king says, ‘Come down.’ ” 10 But Elijah answered the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty. 11 Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty men with his fifty. And he answered and said to him, “O man of God, this is the king’s order, ‘Come down quickly!’ ” 12 But Elijah answered them, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty. 13 Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and entreated him, “O man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty servants of yours, be precious in your sight. 14 Behold, fire came down from heaven and consumed the two former captains of fifty men with their fifties, but now let my life be precious in your sight.” 15 Then the angel of the LORD said to Elijah, “Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.” So he arose and went down with him to the king 16 and said to him, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron—is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word?—therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’ ” 17 So he died according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. Jehoram became king in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, because Ahaziah had no son. 18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

  • Plan A: Ahaziah – witchcraft
  • Plan B. Elijah – worship

The Angel of the Lord – “the angel of the Lord” who judges by fire (2 Kings 1:15) = Jesus Christ

Angels = military ranks known as the “heavenly host” (Deu 4;19; 1 Ki 22:19)

  • Individually – soldiers called “mighty ones” (Ps.  103:20)
  • Led by a high ranking angel = captain/prince (Joshua 5:14)
  • Helped Israel’s physical wars as spiritual troops in fight (Judges 5:20; 2 Kings 6:17).

=Here & Mount Carmel, military angels = air support/fire strikes ordered by King Jesus Heaven

Flames foreshadowing & forewarning

The fires of hell

Matthew 25:41 the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Revelation 20:10,14-15; 21:8 “…the devil…was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever….Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. …And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire…he cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Matthew 10:28 do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

·         #1 person in Scripture to teach on judgment and hell is Jesus Christ

·         13% teaching; majority parables

·         Jesus Gehenna/dump 11X (fire, weeping, wailing, gnashing teeth, darkness)

= A. Conscious B. Eternal C. Irreversible D. Just E. Punishment

Who rules hell?

Revelation 14:10-11 “he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night.”

Philippians 2:10-11 “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord…”

What is the wrath of God?

John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

  • WRATH – all justice no grace, no mercy, no exception
  • Holiness – #1 Attribute vs Demons & Sinners
  • OT – 20 words nearly 600X

CONVERSATION LAST NIGHT

A.Passive wrath                      B. Active wrath

Rom 2:5 …you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

  • Either you get wrath, or Jesus gets wrath for you “WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME”

Options When You Die?

1.    Nothing happens when you die. = No reward, no justice, no reunion

2.    Everyone goes to Heaven = just like earth forever

3.    Everyone goes to Hell = justice (Satan/demons)

4.    Those who love the Father & Family go to Heaven which is where they want to be, those who don’t love the Father & Family are forever removed so God’s Family is protected

Ezekiel 33:11 “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live”

CLOSE

No more politicians. No more demons. No more injustice. No more lies. No more suffering. No more death. Everyone & everything is perfect.
