When Will Elijah Return to Earth for His End Times Ministry?

Elijah was supernaturally taken up into Heaven before he died, but will he return to earth again in the end times? In this final sermon of the "New Days, Old Demons" series, Pastor Mark shows what successful succession between Elijah and his protege Elisha looks like and gives us hope for the return of Jesus, and possibly Elijah, at the Second Coming.

When will Elijah return to earth for his end times ministry? (2 Kings 2:1-18)

Live for Your Last Day

2 Kings 2:1-8 Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.” Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.” Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground.

Successful Succession

Kings 2:When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” 10 And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.” 11 And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. 13 And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him opposite them, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him. 16 And they said to him, “Behold now, there are with your servants fifty strong men. Please let them go and seek your master. It may be that the Spirit of the Lord has caught him up and cast him upon some mountain or into some valley.” And he said, “You shall not send.” 17 But when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, “Send.” They sent therefore fifty men. And for three days they sought him but did not find him. 18 And they came back to him while he was staying at Jericho, and he said to them, “Did I not say to you, ‘Do not go’?”

Chariots of Fire

Open vs Closed Hand = “mystery”

Successful Succession (GRACE TRACK)

1.    Honor founder & future (prophetic word)

2.    Chosen by =A). God         B). Founder/senior leader       C). Confirmed Elisha/50 leaders

3.    Father/son by Spirit (Trinity): A. Physical (John Bap) B. Spiritual (2x “my father” 2 Ki 2:12)

4.    Time together for transition IMPARTATION VS INFORMATION

5.    Elisha’s = “God saves”, called “man of God”

6.    #2 then #1 = (1 Pet. 5:5-6) VS -3 Jn. 9 “…Diotrephes… likes to put himself first…” SATAN #1

7.    60 yr ministry – miracles, preach, teach, dealing w/same demons & gov’t = keep fight

8.    Mentioned by Jesus Lk 4:27 “the prophet Elisha” (3 menbodies Heaven Jesus-Enoch-Elijah)

The Spirit of Elijah Came with John

Malachi 4:5 “I will send you Elijah the prophet before…the LORD comes.”

  • Dual fulfilment:             A). John Baptizer 1st Coming                         B). Elijah 2nd Coming

Matthew 17:10-13 the disciples asked…”why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” He answered…Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him…” Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

Luke 1:17 John the Baptizer came, “in the spirit and power of Elijah”.

Elijah went up. Jesus came down. Elijah came down

Matthew 17:1–3 Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah….

The Second Coming of Elijah Prepares for the Second Coming of Jesus

Revelation 11:1,6-11 “I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”…They have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague…when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, and their dead bodies will lie in the street…For three and a half days…peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, and…rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents…But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here!” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them…there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.”

Progressivism = lie (internal vs external) NOAH’S DAY

1.    2nd coming of Elijah then 2nd Coming Jesus

2.    2-3 WITNESSES??? Elijah & Enoch or Moses? (Heb. 9:27 die “once”)

3.    Passover seder meal – 1). Leave door open for Elijah 2). Set “the cup of Elijah”

5.    Tech – GLOBAL HOLIDAY -whole world sees dead bodies lying in street 3.5 days

BIRTH PAINS – 1. Frequency 2. Intensity = Great pain births new life!
