Spirit-Filled Men

Free resource: Spirit-Filled Jesus

Luke 6:43-45 Jesus says men are like trees

  1. Some men are good trees that bear good fruit
  2. Some men are bad trees that bear bad fruit

? Find difference good tree/life & bad tree/life = inspect fruit (Flesh/Spirit)

Feed Your Deepest Desires

Galatians 5:16-17 walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

  • NOT perfect YOU but a NEW YOU on the path to perfection

Non-XN vs XN

  1. Non-XN – deepest desires from your fallen flesh
  2. XN – deepest desires from Holy Spirit

HS changes your “want to”. Most peaceful & joyful you is in the HS.

Works of the Flesh

Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  1. Sexual immorality – porneia – anything outside hetero marriage
  2. Impurity – any moral filth that separates from God
  3. Sensuality – lack of restraint, decency = driven by emotion & pleasure
  4. Idolatry – someone or something other than God is the center of our life
  5. Sorcery – spirituality without the Spirit
  6. Enmity – hatred not forgiveness
  7. Strife – conflict, drama
  8. Jealousy – coveting
  9. Fits of anger – male depression
  10. Rivalries – ladder climbing, unholy competing
  11. Dissensions – us vs them
  12. Divisions – 2 visions (contrarian, anti-authority rebel)
  13. Envy – peoples pain is your pleasure, & their pleasure is your pain.
  14. Drunkenness – substance abuse/addiction
  15. Orgies – partying, pornography, sexual sins of various kinds
  16. And things like these – Junk Drawer

Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-26 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

  1. Love – God’s love for us, in us, and through us
  2. Joy – in God’s will
  3. Peace – with God and others
  4. Patience – seeking God’s timing
  5. Kindness – considerate and not rude
  6. Goodness – generosity in our words, wealth, and works
  7. Faithfulness – reliable, trustworthy
  8. Gentleness – not domineering
  9. Self-control – not self-indulgent or out of control

Fruit = healthy person nourishes others (better husb, father, bro, worker)

2 Ways to Be Spirit-Filled Men

John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me…bears much fruit

Luke 11:13 [NLT] “if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”

=Anointing

HS flow on you, in you, through you in power = serve God & bless others

Symbol – oil that flows down – leads to a “flow” in the Spirit

Christ the man – “anointed one”; Lk. 4:18 “the Spirit is upon me…he has anointed me”

Christ’s men

Luke 4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit…was led by the Spirit in the wilderness

  • HS leads you so you can lead others
  • Don’t be lead by fear of man, or negative emotions

Luke 4:14 Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit…and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country.

  1. Power
  2. Fresh anointing for new seasons/needs

Group Discussion Questions

Take a few moments to briefly introduce yourself in a few sentences.

Looking at previous generations of men in your family, did they live more in the flesh or the Spirit?

What changes do you need to make for this year to be more Spirit and less flesh?

How can we pray for you?
